DESCRIPTION:
A landscape design that connects disparate use-cases and facilitates movement across multiple levels of information and physical space.
OBJECTIVE:
Design a bridge to replace the connection between two buildings that contain the College of Design at NCSU. Prototype 4 different concepts. Develop and present a final design.
METHODS:
After studying the real-world bridge location and identifying the most heavily trafficked paths through observation and network diagramming, each of the 4 bridge prototypes focused on efficiently connecting destinations using different methods of assembling simple materials. Extensive use of brick surrounding the site supported the use of modular masonry units. The underside of the final design is a series of arched barrel vaults created from LED display tiles representing technological innovation, while the modular stacked forms on the upper level represent universal components of design that are configured to encourage thought about shape and form while also creating functional outdoor gathering spaces that do not impede movement through the space.
RESULTS:
The final design efficiently connects each of the design disciplines to needed resources, pays homage to the technological influence on design, and provides much needed green space that encourages interdisciplinary gathering. This project emphasized the importance of rapid design iteration and working through a broad range of concepts to quickly and efficiently arrive at the best design solution.
